Chapter 14

Kalen’s mouth spreads in a wide grin as he watches me inspect the some of the clothes he brought me from the Fomor house he visited. “Very pretty, is it not?”

“Oh, yes, very pretty,” I say, holding the dress up to his light.

I ended up sleeping through Finn and Kalen’s return, and he’s been awaiting my approval on his selection. From what I’ve picked out of the pile of feminine clothing so far, he’s not a fan of full-coverage garments. “Quite sheer as well, I see …”

“Yes! I knew you’d like it. This will accentuate your human curves and show off your dragon.”

I fight the urge to roll my eyes at him. He’s trying—I have to remind myself of that. He doesn’t know what I like yet, and besides, maybe this is how Fomorians dress here in Faerie. This may have been the best of what he had to choose from. “And you’re sure the Queen has all the paths to my realm locked down?”

Finn nods. “Yes. I checked the nearest pathways into the human realm while Kalen was on his mission, and all are guarded. I have no doubt that the same holds true for any path we might encounter.”

With a heavy sigh, I take off Oren’s t-shirt and shimmy into the flimsy black dress. “Well, then, I guess this will have to do.” After eyeing the pile of male clothing and seeing nothing that would fit my size and shape, I dig through my own donated clothes one more time before looking back at Kalen. “The Fomorians really didn’t have any underwear they could spare? No pantaloons or underskirts or anything?”

“No. Why? Do you require them?”

I sigh again and smooth down the hips of the skirt. “Guess not.” Spying a pair of small black boots among the gifts, I unlace my Kiks and slip on the fae-style shoes. They fit great, and it surprises me that they’re actually more comfortable on the rocky ground than my brand name insoles.

“Oh!” Kalen’s eyebrows shoot up, and he digs into a pocket. “I also acquired these while I was there. My half-blood friends are not as affected by iron as we full-blooded fae, but they are averse enough that one of them took up silversmithing.” He pulls out a handful of small, polished silver rings and bars, one for each of my piercings, and holds the stash out to me. “Will these suffice to replace your steel jewelry?”

I take the gift with wide eyes. “I thought you enjoyed the steel. Didn’t you say you thought that was your kink?”

Kalen nods. “Yes, I do enjoy the burn from the iron alloy in your ornaments, but I also know that Finn did not enjoy them quite as much as I did, and, knowing Oren, I suspect he did not find it pleasing at all. Besides, you get so concerned when one of us is injured, even from such a small amount of damage; better to replace them and be done with it.”
